Induced pluripotent stem cells in multiple system atrophy: recent developments and scientific challenges

AbstractMultiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease, with no known genetic cause to date. Oligodendroglial α-synuclein accumulation, neuroinflammation, and early myelin dysfunction are hallmark features of the disease and have been modeled in part in various preclinical models of MSA, yet the pathophysiology of MSA remains elusive. Here, we review the role and scientific challenges of induced pluripoten t stem cells in the detection of novel biomarkers and druggable targets in MSA.
