Prognostic Value of Preoperative Red Cell Distribution Width: Fine-Tuning by Mean Corpuscular Volume

ConclusionsAbnormal RDW and MCV is associated with higher risk of transfusion and postoperative outcomes after cardiac surgery. RDW is one of the most important variables in predicting outcomes, but MCV provides additional prognostic value. Both should be taken into consideration when estimating the perioperative risk of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Conclusions: Compared with standard management, the SAFETY intervention is potentially a dominant strategy for those with chronic, non-valvular AF. However, there would be substantial value in reducing the uncertainty in these estimates from further research. ConclusionsOlder age, history of atrial fibrillation and pneumonia are associated with increased risk of influenza-associated in-hospital and 90-day mortality. Statin use may decrease 90-day mortality.

Atzema, Allan SkanesAbstractThis commentary discusses concerns raised by Canadian emergency physicians regarding Recommendations 2 and 6 from the recent CCS 2018 Update for atrial fibrillation. These recommendations narrow the window for safe cardioversion and suggest four weeks of anticoagulation for all patients undergoing urgent cardioversion regardless of their CHADS-65 status. We discuss the implications of GRADE weak recommendations...

Authors: Bond DA, Alinari L, Maddocks K Abstract Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a heterogeneous and uncommon non-Hodgkin lymphoma that affects predominantly older patients and often is associated with an aggressive clinical course. MCL relies upon B-cell receptor signaling through Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK); therefore, the development of the BTK inhibitors ibrutinib and acalabrutinib represents a therapeutic breakthrough. In this review, we provide a summary of the efficacy and safety data from the landmark trials of single-agent ibrutinib and acalabrutinib that led to US Food and Drug Administration approval of t...

In general, early experience with the first-generation cryoballoon introduced an increase in radiation exposure as compared to traditional radiofrequency ablations for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, through operator vigilance and the incorporation of various techniques and technologies, procedural radiation exposure can be managed to an exceptionally low level while maintaining the safety and efficacy of the cryoballoon procedure.
