The impact of cholesterol deposits on the fibrillar architecture of the Achilles tendon in a rabbit model of hypercholesterolemia

Increased tendon pain and tendon damage is a significant complication related to hyperlipidemia. Unlike the well-established pathogenesis associated with increased serum concentrations of total cholesterol, tr...

Abstract The mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes acute pain and joint inflammation, and in recent years, the virus has caused large epidemics in previously CHIKV-free geographic areas. To advance the understanding of host factors that antagonize CHIKV, we show that synthetic agonist of Liver X Receptor (LXR-623) inhibits CHIKV replication by upregulating the cholesterol exporter ABCA1, and that endogenous and pharmacological activation of interferon signaling pathway partners with LXR-623 to generate a superior antiviral state. Abstract Microneedle (MN) patch has been used for collecting dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) containing biomarkers from patients with safety, pain-free and easy-to-use manner. However, long sampling time for biomarkers analysis still poses a significant challenge. Here, we describe a new sponge-forming MN patch consisting of polyvinyl formal (PVF) for rapidly extracting ISF from skin. Owing to the supreme water affinity of PVF, this MN patch can extract 1.6 mg ISF in 1 min without the assistance of extra devices, which remarkably facilitates timely analysis. The MN patch had preserved structural integrit...

A 45-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with nausea and vomiting. Her symptoms had started seven days earlier and steadily worsened. She reported generalized abdominal pain and distention and that her eyes appeared yellow. The patient had no past medical history, took no medications, and said she did not drink or use drugs. Her history showed that she had been drinking an herbal preparation every day for the past five months to ameliorate her heavy menstrual periods. The patient had mild right upper quadrant tenderness but no distention, rebound, or guarding. Her lungs were clear, and her heart rate and rhy...

Conclusions: People with moderate-severe TBI experience other medical and mental health comorbidities during the long-term course of recovery and life after injury. The findings can inform further investigation into comorbidities associated with TBI and the role of medical care, surveillance, prevention, lifestyle, and healthy behaviors in potentially modifying their presence and/or prevalence over the life span.

This study sought to investigate what could be learned from how these men have fared. The men were born in 1925-1928 and similar health-related data from questionnaires, physical examination, and blood samples are available for all surveys. Survival curves over various variable strata were applied to evaluate the impact of individual risk factors and combinations of risk factors on all-cause deaths. At the end of 2018, 118 (16.0%) of the men had reached 90 years of age. Smoking in 1974 was the strongest single risk factor associated with survival, with observed percentages of men reaching 90 years being 26.3, 25.7, ...

Authors: Sutliffe JT, Gardner JC, Gorman MM, Carnot MJ, Wetzel WS, Fortin T, Sutliffe CA, Adams A Abstract This nonrandomized pilot study utilized the health belief model and the theory of planned behavior to assess the effectiveness of perceived behavioral control to determine the impact of a micronutrient-dense plant-rich (mNDPR) dietary intervention on employee health and wellness at the worksite. Seventy-one employees and/or spouses (≥18 years) who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from a regional medical center and a local university. Participants were provided more than 14 hours of in...
