Neural Basis of Mind-Body Pain Therapies

The NCCAM Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary and alternative medicine practices and approaches, and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine. This lecture will focus on the growing problem of chronic pain. Chronic pain has reached epidemic levels in the US, with more than 100 million American adults affected. Pain is costing our nation more than $600 billion each year. To face this growing problem, many people are turning to mind-body therapies, such as relaxation, meditation, yoga and cognitive-behavioral therapy, to help manage chronic pain. This lecture will address how these therapies alter pain processing and pain modulation in the brain, as well as how they may be protective against brain aging.
