The objective of this study was the evaluation of Hawthorn and Rosemary methanol extracts as preventive treatment in alcoholic liver disease (ALD). ALD rat model was used to measure serum hepatic enzyme levels (AST, ALT, γ-GT and ACP), total bilirubin, liver glycogen, lipid peroxidation, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and serum lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL) as well as histopathological analysis in hepatic tissues was recorder. Phytotreatments showed preventive effect, decreasing AST, γ-GT, lipid peroxidation and bilirubin indictors while TAC and liver glycogen stores increase. ...

AbstractFamilial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disorder that affects 1 in 250 people. Aortic stiffness, measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV), is an independent predictor for cardiovascular events. Young FH patients are a unique group with early vessel wall disease that may serve to elucidate the determinants of aortic stiffness. We hypothesized that young FH patients would have early changes in aortic stiffness compared to healthy, age- and sex-matched reference values. Thirty-three FH patients (  ≥ 7 years age; mean age 14.6 ± 3.3 years; 26/33 on statin...

Objective: To explore the therapeutic mechanism of the Huoxin formula on arterial functions in CHD patients. Materials and methods: Fifty-eight CHD patients receiving cardiovascular drugs including β-receptor blocker, statins, and antiplatelet medications or others were randomized into intervention [additionally 13.5 g Huoxin formula granules dissolved in 150 mL warm water per time, twice a day (n&thins...

This study was aimed at assessing the role of H. pylori infection in GERD utilizing a large cohort of patients diagnosed with GERD. Methods and Materials: All patients who underwent gastroscopy for an indication of GERD during the study period between 2015 and 2017 at the EMMS Nazareth Hospital were considered eligible for the study and therefore were included. H. pylori infection was determined by the rapid urease test or histology. Severity of esophagitis was assessed using the Los Angeles classification. Univariate analysis was performed to figure out differences between patients according to H. pylori infection sta...

CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the nonuse of LT, there may be a hierarchy of residual vascular risk after stroke by non-LDL type and target, while on LT. Particularly, stroke patients with low HDL-C levels on LT may benefit from additional therapeutic strategies to improve their outcomes. PMID: 31189759 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
