We present a retrospective analysis of 249 RCCs (203 clear cell, 32 papillary and 14 chromophobe RCCs). We found that 77.8% of tumors of ≤4 cm and only 28.8% of RCC of>7 cm were limited to the kidney. The likelihood of lymphovascular invasion, fibrous renal capsule/perinephric fat/renal sinus fat, and vascular infiltration increased dramatically with increasing tumor size, particularly over 4.5 cm. Fat tissue was more often invaded through the renal sinus than through the renal capsule. Nuclear grade was significantly related to the pT stage, tumor size, percentage of necrotic area, lymphovascular invasion, fibrous r...

This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of pre- and postoperative concentration of TATI in serum (S-TATI) of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: S-TATI was determined by time resolved immunofluorometric assay in preoperative and postoperative samples that were collected from 132 RCC patients, who underwent partial or complete nephrectomy in Helsinki University Hospital from May 2005 to July 2010. RESULTS: Preoperative S-TATI was significantly associated with tumour stage, lymph-node involvement, metastatic stage, Chronic Kidney Disease Stage (CKD grade), and preoperative C-rea...

Authors: Ryan ST, Patel DN, Ghali F, Patel SH, Sarkar R, Yim K, Eldefrawy A, Cotta BH, Bradshawh AW, Meagher MF, Hamilton ZA, Murphy JD, Derweesh IH Abstract BACKGROUND: The impact of positive surgical margins (PSM) on outcomes in partial nephrectomy (PN) is controversial. We investigated impact of PSM for patients undergoing PN on overall survival (OS) in different stages of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients from the US National Cancer Database who underwent PN for cT1a-cT2b N0M0 RCC between 2004-13. Patients were stratified by pathological stage [pT1a, pT1b, pT2a, pT2b, a...

This study aimed to explore the relationship between miR-33b-5p expression and RCC progression and prognosis. METHOD: RT-qPCR, CCK-8 assay, wound scratch assay, transwell assay and flow cytometry assay were used to evaluate the expression and function of miR-33b-5p in RCC. Additionally, RCC samples and survival data from The Cancer Genome Atlas were used to analyze the prognostic functions of miR-33b-5p. RESULTS: miR-33b-5p expression in RCC tissues and cell lines (786-O, ACHN) were found to be significantly downregulated, compared with normal tissues and cell lines (P

Based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results studies, most renal cancers are low grade and slow growing. Long-term, single-center studies show excellent outcomes for T1a renal cell carcinoma (RCC), comparable to partial nephrectomy without affecting renal function and with much lower rates of complications. However, there are no multicenter randomized controlled trials of multiple ablative modalities or comparison with partial nephrectomy, and most studies are single-arm observational studies with short-term and intermediate follow-up. For treatment of stage T1a RCC, percutaneous TA is an effective alternative to s...

AbstractAlveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue tumor of unknown histogenesis generally characterized by the der(17)t(X;17)(p11.2;q25) translocation which results in theASPSCR1-TFE3 gene fusion. Primary ASPS of the thyroid gland has not yet been reported. During oncology follow-up for breast cancer, a pulmonary nodule and thyroid gland mass  were identified in a 71-year-old Korean male. Thyroid ultrasound showed a 5.7 cm left thyroid gland mass. After several fine needle aspirations, a thyroid gland lobectomy was performed after documenting only non-caseating granulomatous inflammation in a biopsy...

We present a case of asymptomatic chyluria in a 70-year-old man detected two years after microwave ablation of renal cell carcinoma. Chyluria is a rare complication of partial nephrectomy, but has not been previously reported after renal microwave ablation therapy. Recently, percutaneous thermal ablation techniques for T1a renal cancers are in surge due to comparable treatment efficacy, less invasive nature and lower complications. It is imperative to be aware of the post-ablation imaging findings and complications for correct diagnosis.
