Kimberly Halla, MSN, FNP-C - Realizing the Promise of PARP Inhibitors in Solid Tumor Therapy: Guiding Oncology Nurses on the Advances and Challenges

Go online to PeerView.com/KWE860 to view the activity, download slides and practice aids, and complete the post-test to earn credit. In this PeerView MasterClass, an expert panel of oncology nurse professionals presents the highlights of emerging science and clinical data on PARP inhibition in multiple solid tumors, assesses the role of companion diagnostic tests that identify patients with DDR mutations, as well as engage the audience in a stimulating discussion on the value of genetic testing and significance of enrollment in ongoing PARP inhibitor clinical trials. Going beyond the standard didactic lectures, our experts share their own perspectives on best practice strategies to effectively and safely use approved and emerging PARP inhibitors within the framework of challenging case scenarios. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Describe DNA-damage response (DDR) pathways and the rationale for targeting DDR mutations with PARP inhibitors as a cancer therapeutic strategy, Assess the clinical role, efficacy, and safety of PARP inhibitors in multiple tumor types, including ovarian, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, across different treatment settings, Counsel patients receiving PARP inhibitor therapy on strategies to prevent and/or manage treatment emergent adverse events, Provide appropriate education and guidance to patients on the safe and effective clinical use of novel PARP inhibitors, including dosing, the need for adherence to therap...

ConclusionOverall, these guidelines provide consistent recommendations on who should receive breast reconstruction education, who is a candidate for postmastectomy breast reconstruction, and the appropriate timing of reconstruction and extent of mastectomy. Future updates from all should focus on expanding to include alloplastic and autologous forms of reconstruction and should include a broad scope of relevant questions.

This study, therefore, aims to investigate the effects of generalised trust and happiness on all-cause and cause-specific mortality. The distinction between different causes of death (i.e. cardiovascular vs. cancer-related mortality) allowed us to assess if psychosocial mechanisms could account for associations between generalised trust, happiness and mortality. The study sample was derived from US General Social Survey data from 1978 to 2010 (response rates ranged from 70 to 82 per cent), and combined with death records from the National Death Index. The analytical sample comprised 23,933 individuals with 5382 validated d...

Authors: Feng X, Zhang M, Meng J, Wang Y, Liu Y, Liang C, Fan S Abstract We aimed to investigate the potential mechanisms of progression and identify novelprognosis-related biomarkers for papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) patients. The relateddata were derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and then, analyzed by Weightedgene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). The correlation between each module andthe clinical traits were analyzed by Pearson's correlation analysis. Pathway analysis wasconducted to reveal potential mechanisms. Hub genes within each module were screenedby intra-module analysis, and vis...

We report a unique case of a 60-year-old woman developing endometrial cancer in a uterine deposit 18 years after she had undergone laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy with morcellation for benign pathology. She had used unopposed estrogen as menopausal hormone therapy. She presented with a pelvic mass that was causing pressure symptoms. On imaging, the mass had an enhancing vascular nodular component and appeared to abut normal ovaries and the residual cervix. She proceeded to laparotomy, where a 12 cm pelvic mass was found morbidly adherent to the bladder anteriorly and to the cervical stump. The pelvic mass was excise...

Authors: Lee YK, Hwangbo Y, Lee S, Lee DE, Lee EK, Yeom MS, Joo J, Kong SY Abstract Background While aspirin use is known to be associated with reduced incidence of various cancer types, it is unclear if this benefit extends to thyroid cancer. We aimed to evaluate the association between aspirin use and thyroid cancer development. Methods This nested case-control study used nationwide data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort 2002-2015. In total, 4,547 individuals with newly developed thyroid cancer were matched with 13,641 controls based on age, sex, and follow-up period. Odds r...

Conclusion: Following an initial non-diagnostic FNAB, the probability of yielding a diagnostic result declines with each sequential repeat FNAB. Nonetheless, a tangible possibility of malignancy remains even after repeated non-diagnostic FNABs.  . PMID: 31950884 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Paparodis R, Karvounis E, Bantouna D, Chourpiliadis C, Chourpiliadi H, Livadas S, Imam S, Jaume JC Abstract BACKGROUND: Incidental finding of differentiated thyroid microcarcinomas (DTMc) in patients undergoing thyroid surgery for benign indications, has become increasingly common. Even though carcinogenesis might relate to the background disease of the gland, the incidence of DTMc in the setting of various thyroid disorders remains unclear. We designed the present study to address this question. METHODS: We reviewed data from two prospectively collected databases of consecutive patients undergoing thy...

Conclusions: Overall, we propose that the four hub genes may be potential targets in trastuzumab-resistant gastric cancer and that ISGs may play a key role in promoting trastuzumab resistance in GC. PMID: 31949544 [PubMed - in process]
