HbA1c-testing: Evaluation of two point-of-care analysers

HbA1c is a sub-fraction of haemoglobin A, which in turn is the main fraction of haemoglobin. HbA1c is formed by posttranslational glycation of haemoglobin A. This modification occurs due to binding of a glucose molecule at the N-terminal valin of the β-chain of haemoglobin A. The reaction is spontaneous and non-enzymatic. Therefore, the concentration of glycated haemoglobin depends on the concentration of glucose in the blood and the time erythrocytes are exposed to glucose [reviewed in Ref. [1]].
