Per-oral Excision of Benign Tumors of the Esophagus

Benign lesions of the esophagus pose a therapeutic challenge as their resection can sometimes involve technically challenging and somewhat morbid operations. Flexible endoscopic approaches offer a less invasive approach and, if approached correctly, even larger esophageal masses can be resected. Here we describe in detail an advanced endoscopic technique for approaching larger benign esophageal masses, in this case a leiomyoma. This approach entails a submucosal tunneling technique with circumferential and transmural mobilization of the mass and extraction through the submucosal tunnel with endoscopic closure of the mucosotomy.
