Acute liver failure associated with influenza A virus infection: an autopsy case report.

Acute liver failure associated with influenza A virus infection: an autopsy case report. Jpn J Infect Dis. 2019 May 31;: Authors: Nonaka K, Matsuda Y, Kakizaki M, Takakuma S, Hamamatsu A, Sakashita Y, Matsubara T, Murayama S, Ishiwata T, Yamanaka N, Itabashi M, Takei T, Nakajima N, Hasegawa H, Arai T Abstract An 84-year-old man with chronic renal failure, anemia, and diabetes was admitted for hemodialysis initiation. His vital signs were stable until the eighteenth hospital day, before having an influenza A virus infection. Three days later, he died of septic shock with severe liver impairment. His leukocyte count, prothrombin time (PT-INR), and liver enzymes, such as AST and ALT, were significantly increased. Hypercytokinemia was also observed. Autopsy revealed bilateral diffuse pneumonia with neutrophil infiltration. The liver showed extensive centrilobular hepatocyte necrosis. Immunohistochemistry for influenza A nucleoprotein was positive in the ciliated columnar epithelium of the bronchi and negative in the trachea, lungs, and liver. Hypoxic hepatitis is characterized by an abrupt and massive increase in aminotransferase levels (more than 20 times of the upper normal limit) due to the anoxic centrilobular hepatocyte necrosis. The occurrence of hypoxic hepatitis requires a pre-existing, chronic condition, such as anemia, causing less oxygen supply to the liver, followed by an acute drop in hepatic oxygen supply, such as septic shock. Therefore, this ...

AbstractTo evaluate the efficacy of selective retina therapy (SRT) in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) based on pretreatment central foveal thickness (CFT). Seventy-two eyes of 63 patients with DME who had previously undergone SRT were included. Patients were divided into two groups based on the CFT at baseline. Group 1 was composed of 35 eyes with CFT

Authors: Furaz Czerpak K, Gruss Vergara E, Barril Cuadrado G, Pérez Fernández E, Benavides N, de la Flor J, Mendez Á, Martín R Abstract INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is very common in haemodialysis (HD) patients, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. The goals of our research were to: 1. Measure blood pressure (BP) during HD sessions; 2. Study BP in between HD sessions with 44-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM); 3. Identify differences between the BP recorded during HD and with the ABPM; 4. Evaluate changes in treatment after the ABPM; 5. Perform bioi...

How these immune components communicate during an acute DNA viral infection is not well understood. Intranasal infection of mice with vaccinia virus causes lethal pneumonia and systemic dissemination. Here we report that vaccinia host range protein C7 is a critical virulence fact...

The outbreak of algae blooms depends on the competitive advantage of their heteromorphic life history: colonial formation is beneficial to resist zooplankton predation, and the single isolated cells can absorb nutrients rapidly. To better understand the different types of cells characteristics of P. globosa that ...

Abstract A 67-year-old male diabetic patient with systemic arterial hypertension was admitted to the emergency department with a necrotic ulcer in the left external malleolus and no palpable popliteal or pedal pulses. Arterial Duplex ultrasound identified femoropopliteal occlusion, with popliteal refilling below the knee and a patent peroneal artery. An endovascular procedure was performed, requiring retrograde access to the popliteal artery to re-establish blood flow and deploy a popliteal stent. Technical success was achieved and the patient underwent debridement of the wound. Two days later, about 48 hours after the ope...
