High body fat (but not BMI itself) linked to four-fold increase in mortality risk after heart bypass surgery

(ESA (European Society of Anaesthesiology)) New research presented at this year's Euroanaesthesia congress in Vienna, Austria (June 1-3, 2019) shows that mortality in patients who had undergone heart bypass surgery was over 4 times higher in individuals with a high body fat mass, while body mass index (BMI) by itself was not associated with an increase in mortality.

We investigated the analgesic efficacy of bilateral superficial cervical plexus block in the intraoperative and postoperative periods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients (n = 46) undergoing thyroidectomy were randomly separated into the following 2 groups: the General Anesthesia Group (GA; n = 23) and the general anesthesia plus BSCPB Group (GS; n = 23). The in...

ConclusionsEndoscopic microwave ablation with patients under local anesthesia is a novel, safe, effective, rapid, well-tolerated, outpatient treatment for adults with epistaxis of isolated mucosal bulge lesions, especially those for whom general anesthesia might be risky, those with electrical implants, and those exhibiting contraindications for arterial embolization.ResumoIntroduçãoEpistaxe recorrente é uma condição clínica comum nos ambulatórios de rinologia. Sob visualização endoscópica, tanto o cautério bipolar quanto a pinça monopolar ...

Several of the locations I'm looking at are staffed by Mednax/ American Anesthesiology. Can anyone at one of their groups- specifically NC, speak about them? Their stock is dropping the last 5 years so I am worried about their "employee stock purchase plan". Seems like a loss of money.

Wilson, Sandeep NayakAbstractMedical devices are one way by which healthcare-associated infections can be transmitted. Medical equipment can be categorized based on its risk of spreading infection and these categories aid decisions about whether to decontaminate or dispose of a used medical device. Decontamination is the process by which a reusable device is rendered safe for further use through cleaning and either disinfection or sterilization. It is frequently an automated process which usually involves...

BrainAbstractQuantitative physicochemical models of human acid–base physiology filled a void between clinical acid–base analysis and general fluid physiology. Established approaches centred on the Henderson–Hasselbalch (HH) equation allow satisfactory bedside exploration of respiratory perturbations, but do not fully elucidate mechanisms of common non-respiratory ‘metabolic’ components. Though useful at the bedside, commonly used ‘rules...

BurnettAbstractAimsNitric oxide (NO) has a critical, but not well understood, influence in the physiology of the lower urinary tract. We evaluated the effect of NO/phosphodiesterase (PDE)5 signaling in voiding dysfunction in the sickle cell disease (SCD) mouse, characterized by low NO bioavailability.Main methodsAdult SCD (Sickle) and wild-type (WT) male mice were treated daily with sodium nitrate (10 mM) or vehicle. After 18 days, b...
