Persistent cholestasis resulting from duodenal papillary carcinoma in an adolescent male: A case report
Conclusion: Cholestasis resulting from primary duodenal papillary carcinoma is rare in pediatric patients but should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
Authors: Yoo JJ, Yu SJ, Lee B, Cho EJ, Lee JH, Kim SG, Kim YJ, Kim YS, Yoon JH Abstract Background/Aims: Patients with an intermediate stage of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represent a highly heterogeneous population; therefore, many models have been proposed to predict the survival of these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic performance of a novel subclassification for tumors classified as Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage B using the Model to Estimate Survival in Ambulatory HCC patients (MESIAH). Methods: This analysis was based on 377 patients with HCC treated at Seoul ...
This study enrolled 2,940 subjects, including patients with GC (n=1,124) or gastric dysplasia (n=353) and controls (n=1,463). Tests to determine sPG levels and Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection status were performed. Area under the curve and receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated to identify the optimal cutoff values for sPG. The usefulness of sPG levels for the detection of GC and gastric dysplasia was validated by multivariate logistic regression. Results: The sPGI/II ratio was associated with the risk of gastric dysplasia and advanced-stage intestinal-type GC (IGC). In contrast, sPGII was associate...
Conclusions: Chromosomal alterations were frequently identified in both PDAC and IPMN with similar patterns. CEP18 gain and 17p and 18q deletions might be involved in the later stages of PDAC tumorigenesis. Chromosome 17p and 18q deletions might be excellent diagnostic markers. Conclusions: Initiating IFN-based treatment prompted some deterioration in general and HCV-related HRQoL, accompanied by impaired daily activities and most work productivity measures; however, the HRQoL and productivity scores improved towards the EOT. HRQoL impairment upon treatment initiation likely contributed to treatment discontinuation. PMID: 31533395 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Conclusion: This study confirmed the association of vitamin D deficiency with hypothyroidism, thyroid autoimmunity, increased volume, nodularity, and vascularity of thyroid gland in hypothyroid patients as well as increased HOMA-IR. It proved the association between HOMA-IR and thyroid autoimmunity. The study proved no association between VDR polymorphisms (Fok1 and Apa1) with either vitamin D levels or TSH levels. Authors: Nakamura H, Utsunomiya A, Ishida Y, Horita T Abstract A 48-year-old man was brought to our emergency room with acute abdominal pain and systemic edema, indicating acute circulatory failure with lactic acidosis. Furosemide treatment paradoxically worsened the systemic edema and induced confusion. He had no drinking history but hardly ate legumes or meats containing thiamine. Administration of fursultiamine dramatically improved the symptoms and subsequently caused pulmonary edema. Thiamine deficiency may occur in nondrinkers with an unbalanced diet. In this condition, diuretic therapy can worsen the symptom...
Conclusion The present study showed that high plasma glucose levels and severe liver fibrosis stage influence insulin secretion levels in Japanese patients with NAFLD. Conservation of delayed insulin secretion levels was confirmed in patients with severe liver fibrosis. PMID: 31534089 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
We describe the case of a 52-year-old female outpatient who developed OIC while receiving oxycodone for pain due to cancer with multiple bone metastases. Although she did not have brain metastasis, opioid withdrawal syndrome (OWS) developed after taking naldemedine orally. Her Clinical Opiate-Withdrawal Score (COWS) was 19 (moderate symptoms). However, she recovered from OWS on intravenous fentanyl and a continuous infusion of oxycodone. She did not develop OWS thereafter and was discharged two days after recovery. Authors: Hotta T, Okimoto T, Hamaguchi M, Tsubata Y, Isobe T Abstract A 40-year-old Japanese man with advanced pulmonary adenocarcinoma harboring anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged was administered the selective ALK inhibitor ceritinib as a third-line treatment and continued treatment for nine months. After fourth-line treatment, we performed rechallenge with ceritinib as a fifth-line treatment. On day 54 after rechallenge, the patient developed acutely deteriorating dyspnea. Chest computed tomography showed extensive ground-glass opacities. We diagnosed him with ceritinib-induced interstitial lung disease...
ConclusionsEGCG can be used for cancer treatment. It increases the potency of several chemotherapeutics such as doxorubicin, cisplatin, and tamoxifen, in vivo and in vitro, in many cancers. MDR reversal by EGCG is facilitated by a plethora of mechanisms including oxidative and antioxidative responses, altered cell death and survival responses, suppression of oncogenic transcription factors, modulating the tumor microenvironment, and regulating multiple signal transduction pathways.
