Carotid-Cavernous sinus fistula (CCF) caused by a ruptured aneurysm of persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is exceptionally rare. Herein, we reported the case of a 64-year-old female who presented with headache, pulsatile tinnitus, and diplopia. Angiography showed a PPTA and CCF. Three-dimensional digital subtraction angiograms revealed a direct shunt between the PPTA aneurysm and the left cavernous sinus. The trigeminal carotid fistula was successfully treated with detachable coils and Onyx, and the PPTA was preserved.

ConclusionSymptoms of eighth nerve dysfunction are present in over half of patients with GCA. Recovery with steroids was predicted by concurrence with headache in terms of both timing and location. It appears that eighth nerve involvement, especially acute hearing loss, is a not infrequent feature of GCA and often responds well to steroid therapy. Clinicians should enquire about these symptoms when evaluating a patient for possible GCA.Key Points• Deafness is a frequent presenting feature of giant cell arteritis.• Vertigo, tinnitus and loss of balance are also often reported by GCA sufferers.• Steroid therap...

ConclusionThis study showed that FS might be associated with MS. Injectable or oral agents are not related to the signs and symptoms of FS. Further studies are needed to validate this association.Relevance of the article for predictive, preventive, and personalized medicineFS is common among MS patients. Being aware of this incidence that might impair the life quality of MS patients is useful to predict the comorbidity and develop preventive strategies and applying personalized treatment options and procedures.

In this study we addressed this issue, testing the hypothesis that limbic changes in tinnitus relate to both disease-related distress as well as co-morbid psychopathology. We obtained high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from a total of 125 subjects: 59 patients with bilateral chronic tinnitus (29 with a co-morbid psychiatric condition, 30 without), 40 healthy controls and 26 psychiatric controls with depression/anxiety disorders (without tinnitus). Voxel-based morphometry with the CAT12 software package was used to analyse data. First, we analysed data based on a 2 × 2 factorial desi...

This study aimed to investigate the influence of treatment with a cochlear implant (CI) on HRQoL, tinnitus distress, psychological comorbidities, and audiological parameters in SSD patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included 20 patients with postlingually acquired SSD (13 women, 7 men, mean age 57.0 years). Data on HRQoL were collected with the Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire (NCIQ) and the Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 Survey (SF-36). Tinnitus distress was assessed with the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ), psychological comorbidities were evaluated with validated questionnai...

Conclusion: HIV affects all stages of auditory perception in a way similar to accelerated aging of the auditory system. And we postulate that synaptic loss may be the first step, followed by cochlear damage and central pathology as the virus remains present in all the structures of the auditory pathway causing local inflammation and degeneration. Evaluation of hearing function among all patients diagnosed with HIV infection seems to be an accepted approach; it should include OAE testing, pure tone and speech audiometry, speech-in-noise tests and ABR measurements.

Publication date: Available online 27 June 2019Source: Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian StudiesAuthor(s): Wa Cai, Ai-Wen Chen, Lei Ding, Wei-Dong ShenAbstractPrevious studies have confirmed the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for tinnitus. However, no relevant studies of the exact mechanism of acupuncture efficacy on tinnitus have been published. Enrolled participants with left-sided tinnitus received acupuncture treatment at TE3 and TE5. The acupuncture session lasted for 30 minutes. The infrared thermography (IRT) test of each participant's bilateral aural regions and visual analog scale scores were taken befor...

Abstract Chronic tinnitus, a symptom of high prevalence, is a persistent hearing sensation in the absence of an external sound source. Recent electrophysiological studies indicate that tinnitus generation is to a high degree the result of maladaptive plasticity in the central auditory pathway. The pitch of the tinnitus sensation can be assessed by performing a pitch matching procedure. In the most frequent "tonal tinnitus" type pure tones are used as test stimuli. However, in the case of tonal tinnitus not a single malfunctioning neuron, but rather a population of neighbouring neurons is involved in the ...
