Life-threatening Listeria meningitis: Need for revision of South African acute bacterial meningitis treatment guidelines.
CONCLUSIONS: Our two cases demonstrate that the listeriosis outbreak should change the way we view bacterial meningitis in SA: according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, empirical treatment for meningitis should include ampicillin and gentamicin in all adult patients with features of meningitis. There may be a need for an updated meningitis treatment guideline in SA. PMID: 31131793 [PubMed - in process]
[Daily Maverick] While the promise of repositioning 'old' drugs such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine is tantalising, it is critical that the hazards of using unapproved treatments are shared with the public to prevent needless fatalities and supply shortages that may further burden already strained healthcare systems.
Thousands of Arkansans who lost their jobs as the COVID-19 disease outbreak shut down businesses are seeking unemployment aid.
[Daily Maverick] Professor Gita Ramjee, who recently returned from a trip to London, had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia. She was Chief Scientific Officer at the Aurum Institute and former chief specialist scientist and director of the South African Medical Research Council's (SAMRC) HIV Prevention Research Unit. She died in an Umhlanga hospital on Tuesday from Covid-19 related complications.

Psychiatric patients may be at higher risk for memory dysfunction and subsequent Alzheimer due to the negative effects of stress and depression on the brain. We carried out longitudinal within-subject studies in male and female psychiatric patients to identify blood gene expression biomarkers that track short term memory as measured by the retention measure in the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test. These biomarkers were prioritized with a...

The field of abdominal organ transplantation is multifaceted, with the clinician balancing recipient comorbidities, risks of the surgical procedure, and the pathophysiology of immunosuppression to ensure optimal outcomes. An underappreciated element throughout this process is acute pain management related to the surgical procedure. As the opioid epidemic continues to grow with increasing numbers of transplant candidates on opioids as well the increase in the development of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, there is a need for greater focus on optimal postoperative pain control to minimize opioid use and improve ou...
Dr. Jeremy Gabrysch spent nearly four years helping run a hospital in Ethiopia before returning to Texas a few years ago and becoming an entrepreneur, starting on-demand health care company Remedy with his wife, Christina. He's reminded of that experience as an emergency medicine physician in the developing world now that the United States is grappling with the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The pandemic "is really taking me back to some of these resource constraints…
Discussion: A tertiary referral center referred 125 individuals to physiotherapy who were eligible for the study; we finally included 93 individuals for statistical analysis. Multiple backward regression analysis showed that gender (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.05-33.82), weight (95% CI, 0.39-1.02), age (95% CI, −0.91 to −0.04), left handgrip strength (95% CI, 0.14-1.44), and inspiratory muscle strength (95% CI, 0.08-0.38) were all independently associated with muscle surface area at L3. All these variables together explained 66% of the variability (R2) in muscle surface area at L3 (P
Conclusion: The current review identified strong, high-quality evidence to recommend hip muscle strengthening in the conservative management of persons with knee OA. Further research is needed to establish the underlying mechanisms for the clinical benefits.
