Authors: Masouris I, Klein M, Ködel U Abstract INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system (CNS) infections can be life-threatening and are often associated with disabling sequelae. One important factor in most CNS infections is a timely pathogen-specific treatment. The diagnostic methods available, however, do not always reach a satisfying sensitivity and specificity. In these cases, there is need for additional diagnostic biomarkers. Chemokines represent potential candidates as biomarkers, since they are an important pillar of the host immune response. The aim of this review is to discuss the diagnostic potential o...

Abstract Ticks are the most important vectors of human pathogens, leading to increased public health burdens worldwide. Tick-borne pathogens include viruses (e.g. tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan); bacteria, such as the causative agents of Lyme disease, spotted fever rickettsiosis and human anaplasmosis; and malaria-like protozoan parasites causing babesiosis. Tick-borne diseases are emerging due to the geographical expansion of their tick vectors, especially in the northern hemisphere. Two examples of this phenomenon are Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum, which have expanded their ranges in the USA i...

Mitochondria, chloroplasts and several species of bacteria have outer membrane proteins (OMPs) that perform many essential biological functions. The β -barrel assembly machinery (BAM) complex is one of the OMPs of Borrelia burgdorferi, the pathogenic spirochete that causes Lyme disease, and its BamA component (BbBamA) includes a C-terminal β -barrel domain and five N-terminal periplasmic polypeptide-transport-associated (POTRA) domains, which together perform a central transport function. In the current work, the production, crystallization and X-ray analysis of the three N-terminal POTRA domains of BbBamA (BbBam...
