Statin Use With Colorectal Cancer Lowers Risk for Early Death

FRIDAY, May 24, 2019 -- Use of statins before or after colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis is linked to a lower risk for premature death, from either cancer or other causes, according to a review published online May 8 in Cancer Medicine. Yue Li,...

In conclusion, it remains unclear if brain-specific regional and temporal changes occur in the expression of the different APP variants during AD progression. Since APP is also found in blood cells, assessing the changes in APP mRNA expression in peripheral blood cells from AD patients has been considering an alternative. However, again the quantification of APP mRNA in peripheral blood cells has generated controversial results. Brain APP protein has been analyzed in only a few studies, probably as it is difficult to interpret the complex pattern of APP variants and fragments. We previously characterized the soluabl...

Baleani Rossana Berardi Colorectal cancer is characterized by high incidence worldwide. Despite increased awareness and early diagnosis thanks to screening programmes, mortality remains high, particularly for patients with metastatic involvement. Immune checkpoint inhibitors or poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-inhibitors have met with disappointing results when used in this setting, opposed to other malignancies. New drugs with different mechanisms of action are needed in this disease. Drug repurposing might offer new therapeutic options, as patients with metastatic colorectal cancer often share risk factors for o...

In this study, we sought to elucidate the role of VRK-1 in regulation of adult life span in C. elegans. We found that overexpression of VRK-1::GFP (green fluorescent protein), which was detected in the nuclei of cells in multiple somatic tissues, including the intestine, increased life span. Conversely, genetic inhibition of vrk-1 decreased life span. We further showed that vrk-1 was essential for the increased life span of mitochondrial respiratory mutants. We demonstrated that VRK-1 was responsible for increasing the level of active and phosphorylated form of AMPK, thus promoting longevity. A Fisetin Variant, C...

Conclusions: DA used in primary care are effective to reduce decisional conflict and improve knowledge on the disease and treatment options, awareness of risk, and satisfaction with the decisions made. More studies are needed to assess the impact of shared decision making in primary care.

ConclusionThe trial evidence is not sufficiently robust to confirm or refute the efficacy and safety of statins in patients with solid malignant tumours. Study and patient characteristics may explain this uncertainty. The potential role of high-dose statins in adjuvant settings deserves further research.

This article summarizes the clinical questions and bottom-line answers from the top 20 POEMs of 2019. Taking blood pressure medications at night results in a large mortality reduction over six years compared with morning dosing. Automated devices are the best way to measure blood pressure. Nonfasting lipid profiles are preferred over fasting lipid profiles, and nonfasting and fasting lipid profiles are equally effective at predicting risk. The benefit of statins for primary prevention in people 75 years and older is uncertain at best. Aspirin has no net benefit for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and has no ef...

Treatment failure of solid cancers, represented by the development of drug resistance in the primary tumor or later outgrowth of drug resistant metastases, is the major cause of death for cancer patients. It represents an urgent clinical need for predictive biomarkers which indicate the success or failure of standard treatment regimens. Besides treatment prediction, interfering with cellular processes associated with drug resistance might improve treatment response by applying combination therapies. Metastasis-associated in colon cancer (MACC) 1 was identified in our group as a prognostic biomarker in human colorectal canc...

Conclusion: Use of 5-ASA was not associated with a lowered cancer risk in Chinese IBD patients. Addition of statin/aspirin provided no additional benefit.Key summaryInflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are associated with increased risk of both intestinal and extra- intestinal cancers.Various medications including 5-aminosalicylate acid (5-ASA), statins and aspirin have been studied for their chemoprevention effects. However, most studies focused on colorectal cancer only and showed conflicting evidence. No studies so far looked at the effects of these medications on all cancer...
