Endocrinologists are needed more than ever. Why are they being devalued?
I chose endocrinology to be my lifelong profession out of love for the complex interactions of endocrine glands and intricate feedback loops. I take pride in preventing medical complications, prolonging life expectancy, and providing complex care to type 1 and type 2 diabetics. At times, this field of work requires spending hours— either with […]Find jobs at Careers by KevinMD.com. Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now. Learn more.
Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for maternal and infant health, yet women with pre-pregnancy diabetes (type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus) are often less likely to breastfeed compared with other childbearing women.
AbstractSarcopenia as a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder that is associated with an increased likelihood of adverse outcomes, including falls, fractures, physical disability, and mortality. On the other hand, an age-related decline in muscle strength prior to the reduction of muscle mass, is proposed to be “dynapenia”. Sarcopenia and dynapenia have recently been recognized as a diabetic complications in type 2 diabetes. We firstly indicated that sarcopenia was frequently observed in 16.6% of patients with type 1 diabetes aged even over 40 years. Additionally, we recently reported that the pr...

CONCLUSIONS: We are very uncertain whether ALC causes a reduction in pain after 6 to 12 months' treatment in people with DPN, when compared with placebo, as the evidence is sparse and of low certainty. Data on functional and sensory impairment and symptoms are lacking, or of very low certainty. The evidence on adverse events is too uncertain to make any judgements on safety. CONCLUSIONS: TC is a special subtype of suprasellar craniopharyngioma, which is remarkably different from NC. Identification of this type of tumor preoperatively is essential for the planning of appropriate surgical approach and degree of excision. PMID: 31200374 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found that O-GlcNAcylation of HDAC4 at Ser-642 is cardio-protective in diabetes and counteracts pathological CaMKII signaling. We introduce a molecular model explaining how diabetic metabolism possesses important cardio-protective features besides its known detrimental effects. A deeper understanding of the here-described PTM crosstalk may lay the ground for the development of specific therapeutic concepts to treat heart failure in the context of diabetes. Conclusion: Our results suggest that AAT is internalized by β cells through clathrin-mediated endocytosis that leads to the suppression of caspase 9 activation. This process is required for the protective function of AAT in islets when challenged with proinflammatory cytokines or after islet transplantation.
We report a case of acute-onset type 1 diabetes due to combined application of nivolumab and intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Gu érin (BCG). An 84-year-old woman underwent lung resection for pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma. She had been treated for type 2 diabetes and later experienced lung cancer recurrence. She was started on nivolumab treatment, and complete response was achieved for one year. However, during this time, she was diagnosed with superficial bladder cancer and underwent surgery but experienced recurrence. After one month of intravesical BCG instillation, the patient developed acute-onset type 1 diabe...
ConclusionThe renal threshold for glucose reabsorption in patients with T1DM was near the normal range and significantly lower than that in patients with T2DM. The efficacy of the SGLT2 inhibitor was better in patients with a higher renal threshold for glucose reabsorption. Thus, these results indicate that it is advisable to estimate the renal threshold for glucose reabsorption prior to initiating SGLT2 inhibitor therapy in patients with T1DM.
