The influence of initial symptoms on phenotypes in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3

ConclusionThese findings collectively suggested that initial symptoms influenced phenotypes in SCA3 and that neurodegeneration in different parts of brain may induce different disease severity in SCA3.

In this study, we examined bacterial communities from cyanobacterial-lichen and moss crust soils in five desert habitats in northern China, and evaluated the relative importance of environmental factors and biocrust development versus geographic distance to the distance–decay relationship. To explore the effects of the sampling scale on geographical patterns, we also examined soil bacterial communities along the slope of sand dunes. Across the five desert habitats, bacterial α-diversity, phylogenetic diversity, and the dominant bacterial phyla in cyanobacterial-lichen crusts did not increase consistently with p...

In this study, surface water and sediment samples were collected in the South Yellow Sea close to Jiangsu Province China, and 26 legacy as well as emerging PFASs were investigated. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) were predominant in the coastal water of the South Yellow Sea with a relatively higher level than other coastal regions in the world. PFBS and 6:2 fuorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) were two major alternatives of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) which were used in textile surface treatment and fire-fighting foams, respectively. Multiple receptor models identified that fluoropo...

A new Chinese coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS virus, has infected more than 200 people since the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December. Scientist Leo Poon, who first decoded the virus, thinks it likely started in an animal and spread to humans.

AbstractBackgroundSince the trauma knowledge of trauma providers correlates with the outcomes of injured patients, this study aims to assess the socio-demographic characteristics and levels of trauma knowledge of trainees in the China trauma care training (CTCT) program in addition to their post-course test results to provide support for the development of trauma care training programs and trauma systems in China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting demographic information, hospital-related information and trauma knowledge of the trainees from 19 regions in China. All participants were assessed by que...

Adaptations to low temperature play a critical role in restricting the geographical distribution of insects. Decreasing day lengths and temperatures trigger seasonal cold adaptations in insects. These adaptions include changes in expression at the miRNA, mRNA and protein levels. The rice water weevil (RWW), Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus, introduced from the Mississippi River, is a globally invasive pest of wetland rice that can survive at the northern border of China. To investigate the changes in expression at the protein level in overwintering female RWW adults, 6-plex tandem mass tags (TMTs) were used in overwintering and s...

AbstractClinical diagnosis of multiple system atrophy is challenging and many patients with Lewy body disease (i.e. Parkinson ’s disease or dementia with Lewy bodies) or progressive supranuclear palsy are misdiagnosed as having multiple system atrophy in life. The clinical records of 203 patients with a clinical diagnosis of multiple system atrophy were reviewed to identify diagnostic pitfalls. We also examined 12 featur es supporting a diagnosis of multiple system atrophy (red flag features: orofacial dystonia, disproportionate antecollis, camptocormia and/or Pisa syndrome, contractures of hands or feet, inspiratory...
