Visual impairment and the use of formal and informal home care in Canada: the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Can J Ophthalmol. 2019 Jun;54(3):367-373 Authors: Aljied R, Aubin MJ, Buhrmann R, Freeman EE Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine the use of home care services in those with and without visual impairment in Canada. DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Participants came from the baseline examination of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging Comprehensive Cohort. Inclusion criteria included age between 45 and 85 years, community dwelling, and living near one of the 11 data collection sites across 7 Canadian provinces. People were excluded if they were in an institution, were living on a First Nations reserve, were full-time members of the Canadian Armed Forces, did not speak French or English, or had cognitive impairment. METHODS: Presenting visual acuity was measured using the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart at 2 meters. Visual impairment was defined as binocular acuity worse than 20/60. The use of formal, informal, and both types of home care was determined by questionnaire. RESULTS: For 29 666 participants, the use of any home care was greater in those with visual impairment than in those without (28% vs 12%, respectively, p

Asenjo, Rodrigo Gatica, Francisco Nualart, Ian Burbulis, Romina BertinatPancreatic β-cells express the gluconeogenic enzymes glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase), fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (FBP), and phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxykinase (PCK), which modulate glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) through their ability to reverse otherwise irreversible glycolytic steps. Here, we review current knowledge about the expression and regulation of these enzymes in the conte...

We investigate gender differences in clinical characteristics and outcomes in ischemic stroke patients with high-grade ICA stenosis. Three-hundred and seventy-two acute ischemic stroke patients with high-grade ICA stenosis were enrolled and followed up for 5 years. Demographic features, vascular risk factors, co-morbidities, and o...

ConclusionsThus, galectin-3 might be a useful prognostic marker in the population with prediabetes and diabetes. Moreover, it can be a marker showing the condition of developing complications in diabetic patients.

ConclusionWe present a comprehensive mRNA expression profile of chromogranin A positive enteroendocrine cells following RYGB in rats. The data provides a region-specific characterization of all regulated preprohormone encoding genes in the rat GI tract including 16 not hitherto known. The comprehensive catalogue of preprohormone expression changes may support our understanding of hormone mediated effects of RYGB on diabetes remission and body weight reduction.Graphical abstract

Authors: Cuarental L, Sucunza-Sáenz D, Valiño-Rivas L, Fernandez-Fernandez B, Sanz AB, Ortiz A, Vaquero JJ, Sanchez-Niño MD Abstract Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAP kinases) are functionally connected kinases that regulate key cellular process involved in kidney disease such as all survival, death, differentiation and proliferation. The typical MAP kinase module is composed by a cascade of three kinases: a MAP kinase kinase kinase (MAP3K) that phosphorylates and activates a MAP kinase kinase (MAP2K) which phosphorylates a MAP kinase (MAPK). While the role of MAPKs such as ERK, p38 and JN...

Conclusion: Many predictors of ICH were identified, however, given the lack of robust evidence, larger cohort studies should be prioritized to confirm these predictors. PMID: 31200607 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsOur results indicate an impairment in autophagic flux in PBMCs from people with prediabetes when compared with control subjects in response to both exercise and RAPA treatment. Future methods of autophagic upregulation should be investigated to spare malfunctions in autophagy in people with prediabetes.RésuméObjectifsRécemment, il a été montré qu'un dysfonctionnement de la voie autophagique a été impliqué dans une altération du métabolisme du glucose et une progression d'un prédiabète en diabète de type 2. Les objec...
