False corneal ectasia in patients referred for corneal crosslinking, topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy, and intrastromal corneal rings.
CONCLUSION: Analysis of data detected a misdiagnosis of ectasia in 20 patients (26 eyes), a finding of 2.0% (20 of 1000) of referred cases that did not satisfy the diagnostic criteria of corneal ectasia. These conditions are considered a contraindication to corneal crosslinking and there is usually no benefit to topography-guided PRK or intrastromal corneal rings. It is important that clinicians recognize the clinical findings of these conditions and differentiate from true keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or ectasia after laser vision correction. Conclusion Consistent with previous studies, our results suggest that PA interventions should aim to increase outdoor time. The observed gender differences in PA correlates suggest the need for a gender-sensitized approach to PA promotion.
Authors: Swiderski K, Bindon R, Trieu J, Naim T, Schokman S, Swaminathan M, Leembruggen AJL, Hill-Yardin EL, Koopman R, Bornstein JC, Lynch GS Abstract Background/Aims: Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy exhibit significant, ongoing impairments in gastrointestinal (GI) function likely resulting from dysregulated nitric oxide production. Compounds increasing neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression and/or activity could improve GI dysfunction and enhance quality of life for dystrophic patients. We used video imaging and spatiotemporal mapping to identify GI dysfunction in mdx dystrophic mice and determine wh...
By Boubaker Ben Belhassen and Vikas RawalROME, Nov 14 2019 (IPS) Pulses are highly nutritious and their consumption is associated with many health benefits. They are rich in proteins and minerals, high in fibre and have a low fat content. Pulses are produced by plants of the Leguminosae family. These plants have root nodules that absorb inert nitrogen from soil air and convert it into biologically useful ammonia, a process referred to as biological nitrogen fixation. Consequently, the pulse crops do not need any additional nitrogen as fertilizer and help reduce the requirement of fossil fuel-based chemical nitrogen fertili...
ConclusionsUsing a laboratory surveillance method to capture hospital-acquired CDI cases is highly sensitive but not overly specific. Changes to improve the specificity of this method are provided.
ConclusionA review of the clinical and genetic literature did not enable us to propose a single diagnosis for these symptoms or this complex syndrome.
This study aimed to evaluate the plasma levels of HBP as a prognostic biomarker for infection-induced organ dysfunction among patients seeking medical attention at the emergency department. Design: Prospective, international multicenter, convenience sample study. Setting: Four general emergency departments at academic centers in Sweden, Switzerland, and Canada. Patients: All emergency encounters among adults where one of the following criteria were fulfilled: respiratory rate>25 breaths per minute; heart rate>120 beats per minute; altered mental status; systolic blood pressure

ConclusionNon-mechanical EXCIMER trephination seems to have advantages regarding postoperative corneal astigmatism and visual acuity compared with FEMTO trephination, especially in KC. A bigger sample size and longer follow-up are needed to evaluate the long-term impact of EXCIMER and FEMTO trephination on postoperative topographic and visual outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS Alport syndrome patients without classical ophthalmological findings have smaller crystalline lens diameter and lower lens power. These signs may support the diagnosis of Alport syndrome. Ophthalmologists should not only seek for the known classic signs, but also the parameters of the crystalline lens, especially if genetic testing is not available. PMID: 30919828 [PubMed - in process]
