Disproving junk science

Philosophers, scientists, and statisticians have debated for centuries whether and how one can prove a negative. We can take proving a negative to an extreme and state that you can never prove beyond reasonable doubt that something does not exist (eg, Nessie might still swim somewhere deep in Scotland ’s Loch Ness). However, this argument from ignorance, a claim that a proposition is true simply because it has not yet been proven false, is a logical fallacy of those who endorse “alternative facts,” alternative belief systems, or alternate universes.
