The role of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 for the absorption of iron preparations in children with iron deficiency anemia. Korean J Pediatr. 2019 May;62(5):173-178 Authors: Manoppo J, Tasiringan H, Wahani A, Umboh A, Mantik M Abstract PURPOSE: To determine whether Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 plays a role in absorption of iron preparations given to children with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). METHODS: We performed a quasi-experimental study involving pre- and postintervention tests using a control group in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, between July and September 2017. We conducted a single-blind controlled trial that included primary school children who were diagnosed with IDA based on reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) levels

We report a 7-year-old boy who presented with AIS and had a history of two transient ischemic attacks in the past 2 years. He was diagnosed to have congenital HICA. However, further evaluation revealed the presence of protein S deficiency as well. This case reemphasizes the need for investigation into multifactorial causation of pediatric AIS in every case.

ConclusionDiamond –Blackfan anemia is a rare disease that carries significant morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed early and managed appropriately. Limited health resources, patient registries, and specialists as seen in developing countries result in a paucity of knowledge about Diamond–Blackfan anemia in Af rica. This case reminds clinicians about Diamond–Blackfan anemia as a cause for anemia in infants, the limitations in making the diagnosis in under-resourced health care systems, and the need for standardized treatment protocols applicable to resource-limited countries.

ConclusionsOur findings confirm that helminth polyparasitism and co-infection with major diseases is common in the tropics. A multitude of factors acting at various hierarchical levels, such as interspecies interactions at the within-host infra-parasite community level and environmental variables at the higher host community level, could explain the observed positive associations between pathogens; there remains a need to develop new frameworks which can consider these multilevel factors to better understand the processes structuring parasite communities to accomplish their control.
