Laparoscopy-assisted ureterostomy – Surgical technique

Urinary diversion such as a cutaneous ureterostomy has been employed for many years as a temporising alternative when definitive reconstruction carries significant morbidity in the very young. A classic scenario is when an infant suffers recurrent pyelonephritis in the background of vesico-ureteric reflux, bladder outlet obstruction or a neurogenic bladder. This video demonstrates the laparoscopy-assisted technique in an infant utilising a trans-umbilical port for vision, two 3mm working instruments, one of which is through the proposed ureterostomy site minimising scarring.
