Evaluation of cyclic direct radionuclide cystography findings with DMSA scintigraphy results in children with a prior diagnosis of vesicoureteral reflux

Conclusion Functional classification of VUR into continuous and transient reflux resulted in higher correlation with DMSA scan findings compared with anatomic reflux grading in follow-up patients with VUR. Cyclic imaging contributed to continuous reflux diagnosis. The significance of functional information obtained from cyclic DRC in initial diagnostic workup, management, and follow-up of children with urinary tract infection needs to be determined with further studies.

Authors: Sarikaya I, Sarikaya A Abstract Pyelonephritis is an infection of the kidneys which is seen more commonly in children than the adults. Technetium-99m-dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc-DMSA) scan is a radionuclide imaging study to detect renal scarring after acute pyelonephritis (late DMSA scan) and also helps to diagnose acute pyelonephritis in febrile urinary tract infections (acute DMSA scan). Planar imaging in multiple views (posterior and posterior oblique) is generally used. Pinhole imaging with a high-resolution collimator magnification of each kidney allows detection of smaller cortical defects. Single...

ConclusionThe heterogeneity of studies means that one effective intervention cannot be recommended. We suggest that feedback should be considered because it facilitated reductions in UTI when used alone or in multi-faceted interventions including education, audit or catheter removal protocols. Multi-faceted education is likely to be effective. Catheter removal protocols, increased staffing, and patient education require further evaluation.

ConclusionsBased on the best available evidence, postoperative oral nitrofurantoin is not effective at reducing UTI/bacteriuria rates in catheterized women after midurethral sling with or without concomitant pelvic reconstructive surgery for prolapse. For midurethral sling alone, pre ‐operative antibiotic prophylaxis may not be needed for UTI prevention. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The management of intestinal tract problems has been the advance use of probiotics in medicine. The aim of this study was evaluate the physicochemical cell surface and adhesion properties of recombinant Lacotococcus lactis NZ1330 containing Ama r 2 gene, followed...

An 8-year-old Japanese boy was referred to a hospital with fever and gross hematuria and was treated with a course of antibiotics. Because the dilatation of the ureter was suspected by abdominal ultrasonographic examination, he was referred to our hospital. We diagnosed congenital bladder diverticulum by computed tomographic scan and carried out laparoscop...

ConclusionsA bilateral duplex collecting system with refluxing upper pole moiety ureter is a very rare entity. The diagnosis should be suspected when exploring any flank pain with recurrent urinary tract infections to avoid subsequent renal impairment. Furthermore, this case shows how some common symptoms may lead to finding an unexpected urinary tract abnormality.

This study also found that Proteus DNA, a genus with many uropathogenic species (Drzewiecka, 2016), was more prevalent in women with OAB compared to asymptomatic controls (Curtiss et al., 2017). IC A recent study by Abernethy et al. suggested that the microbiome may play a role in IC (Abernethy et al., 2017). In this study, 16S rRNA analysis determined the microbiome of catheterized urine from women (n = 40) with IC was not dominated by a single genus and was less likely to contain Lactobacillus compared to asymptomatic women. Abernethy et al. also showed that L. acidophilus was associated with less severe scores on the ...

In conclusion, we unraveled a mechanism of immune evasion of Kpn KPC ST258, which may contribute to design more effective strategies for the treatment of these multi-resistant bacterial infections. Introduction Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn) is a Gram-negative pathogen causing a wide range of infections from urinary tract infections to pneumonia. Kpn is a member of the so-called ESKAPE group of microorganisms, a term that emphasizes the fact that they effectively “escape” the effects of antibacterial drugs (1). Antimicrobial resistance is a significant problem for the treatment of infectious diseases caused ...

In this study, we sought to establish a new, carefully optimized method to extract and purify non-denatured, native FliC from the reference UPEC strain CFT073 to be suitable for immune assays. To achieve purification of FliC to homogeneity, we used a mutant CFT073 strain containing deletions in four major chaperone-usher fimbriae operons (type 1, F1C and two P fimbrial gene clusters; CFT073Δ4). A sequential flagella extraction method based on mechanical shearing, ultracentrifugation, size exclusion chromatography, protein concentration and endotoxin removal was applied to CFT073Δ4. Protein purity and integrity ...

Jangwan, Saurabh YadavAbstractThe field of nanoscience or nanotechnology is gaining popularity day by day and it is now well established field of interdisciplinary sciences. Nanoparticles are synthesized by various methods but suffer from few limitations such as toxicity. To overcome the limitations of various synthesis methods, the focus has shifted to new radius which involves biological organisms such as plants i.e. green synthesis. This phyto-mediated approach using v...
