New composite fillers on the base of fly-ash cenospheres modified with titanium dioxide

Publication date: 2019Source: Materials Today: Proceedings, Volume 12, Part 1Author(s): Tlek Ketegenov, Olesya Tyumentseva, Natasha Khan, Ardak Karagulanova, Markizat MyrzabekovaAbstractThe paper presents the results of a study of the surface modification of fly ash microspheres with titanium dioxide. To improve adhesion of titanium dioxide, the surface of microspheres was pretreated with concentrated alkali solutions followed by low-temperature sintering with mechanically activated mixture of titanium dioxide and alkali. After separation of microspheres, the mixture was hydrolyzed followed by high-temperature drying. The surface of fly ash microspheres were studied by Raman spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The studies have shown the formation of a uniform coating on the surface, consisting mainly of titanium dioxide in the rutile form. The simple instrumental design of the process, based on methods of mechanical activation and sintering, allows us to recommend this method for industrial application.

Publication date: Available online 22 June 2019Source: Sport Management ReviewAuthor(s): Calvin Nite, John NaurightAbstractIn this research, the author sought to understand how organizational practices that harbor and, ultimately, perpetuate abuse become legitimized. The authors drew from the tenets of institutional work to understand how institutional structures were created and legitimized to allow abuse to perpetuate within sport organizations. In examining the sexual abuse scandals of Penn State University, Baylor University, and Michigan State University, the authors found that university administrators and stakeholde...

Conclusion: Use of CT scans to triage an appropriate pleural biopsy method is associated with high diagnostic success. We recommend that the proposed diagnostic workup in this study may be used as a diagnostic algorithm for pleural diseases that require a histopathologic analysis. Determination of risk factors predicting malignant disease in patients where fibrinous pleuritis is reported after MT would be useful for clinical practice.

Conclusions: With a 15% incidence of occult posterior malleolar fractures, a CT scan or multiple orthogonal views can be helpful to avoid missed fractures. Given the wide variability of fracture angle, a single external rotation view is unlikely to prevent all missed fractures on initial radiographic interpretations. Level of Evidence: Level III, retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: To compare retinal pathology visualization in multispectral scanning laser ophthalmoscope imaging between the Spectralis and Optos devices. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 42 eyes from 30 patients with age-related macular degeneration (19 eyes), diabetic retinopathy (10 eyes), and epiretinal membrane (13 eyes). All patients underwent retinal imaging with a color fundus camera (broad-spectrum white light), the Spectralis HRA-2 system (3-color monochromatic lasers), and the Optos P200 system (2-color monochromatic lasers). The Optos image was cropped to a similar size as the Spectrali...

Purpose: To investigate the difference in choroidal hyperpermeability (CH) assessed using digital fundus camera (DFC) and scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) and its effect on photodynamic therapy (PDT) outcomes in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. Methods: Midphase indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) images were acquired using both DFC and SLO in 38 consecutive eyes with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy in this retrospective study. Scanning laser ophthalmoscope-ICGA was taken immediately after DFC-ICGA. Photodynamic therapy was applied to the area of CH associated with subretinal fluid (CH-SRF). The ...

This study reports, for the first time, the interface between 3D printing and 2D inkjet printing technologies in order to fabricate a drug-loaded 3D printed tablet (printlet) with a unique track-and-trace measure in a single step process. In particular, quick response (QR) codes and data matrices were printed onto the surface of polymeric-based printlets for scanning using a smartphone device, and were designed to encode tailored information pertaining to the drug product, patient and prescriber. Moreover, a novel anti-counterfeit strategy was designed, which involved the deposition of a unique combination of material inks...

Controlling aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus (Af) and aflatoxins in grains and food during storage are great challenge to humans worldwide. Alcaligenes faecalis N1-4 isolated from tea rhizosphere soil can produce abundant antifungal volatiles, and greatly inhibited the growth of Af in un-contacted face-to-face dual culture tests. Gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry revealed that dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and methyl isovalerate (MI) were two abundant compounds in the volatile profiles of N1-4. DMDS with the highest relative abundance (69.90%, to the total peak area) in N1-4 volatiles eventually prevented the conidia...

Out of the 22,240 women in the United States who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year, only about 47 percent survive longer than five years. But Dr. Beth Karlan, the newly appointed director of cancer population genetics atUCLA ’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, is hopeful that her research will not only help women get diagnosed with ovarian cancer at an earlier stage, but also identify the women who are most at-risk so they can intervene before the cancer even develops. In this interview, Karlan, who is also the vice chair of women ’s health research in the obstetrics and gynecology department in th...
