This study aims to investigate if the rate of renal function decline in advanced CKD patients is associated to the doses of RAS blockers, and if dual RAS blockade worsens renal function independently of major confounding factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective, observational study in an incident cohort of adult patients with CKD stage 4 or 5 not on dialysis, treated with RAS blockers for at least 3 months prior to the study inclusion. Inclusion criteria were: having at least three consecutive measurements of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in a follow-up period>3 months. Decline in renal function wa...

Authors: Chen L, Luodelete M, Dong C, Li B, Zhang W, Nie P, Liu J, Chen X, Luo P Abstract Background: To investigate the pathological spectrum of glomerular disease in patients with renal insufficiency (RI) from 2008 to 2017. Methods and results: We calculated the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration creatinine (CKD-EPI) equation and defined RI as an eGFR

Current study was designed to investigate the relationship between indoxyl sulphate (IS) and CKD-associated systemic inflammation along with the protective effects of Kloth...

Authors: Kubota M Abstract Recent evidence suggests that hyperuricemia is an important condition in children and adolescents, particularly in association with noncommunicable diseases. This review aims to summarize our current understanding of this condition in pediatric patients. An analysis of serum uric acid reference values in a healthy population indicates that they increase gradually with age until adolescence, with differences between the sexes arising at about 12 years of age. This information should be taken into consideration when defining hyperuricemia in studies. Gout is extremely rare in childre...

Authors: Shchekochikhin D, Nikiforova T, Shilova A, Nesterov A, Baturina O, Gognieva D, Kozlovskaya N, Syrkin A, Kopylov P Abstract Background: Determining the prognosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is problematic, as the ejection fraction cannot be used. Formulae that estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) may be potential prognosticators for this condition, since renal dysfunction is a well-known predictor of poor outcomes of all forms of heart failure. Methods: A prospective observational study of 117 HFpEF patients (average age 71.6±9.1 years; 65.8% women) who had eGFR de...

In this study, we pursued a candidate gene approach to measure WNT pathway genes in residual clinical FFPE biopsies with and without MVI. We focused on the WNT pathway because of previous translational studies that implicated this pathway in chronic renal allograft injury as well as vascular injury in native chronic kidney disease.

Authors: Li AA, Ahmed A, Kim D Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease and encompasses a spectrum of pathology from simple steatosis to inflammation and significant fibrosis that leads to cirrhosis. NAFLD and its comorbid conditions extend well beyond the liver. It is a multisystemic clinical disease entity with extrahepatic manifestations such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and psoriasis. Indeed, the most common causes of mortality in subjects with NAFLD are cardiovascular disease, f...

Abstract The prevalence rates of hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasing with the aging of the population. Hypertension and CKD are closely related, and hypertension with accompanying CKD is difficult to control. This difficulty controlling blood pressure (BP) can be explained by changes in diurnal variation in BP, such as non-dipping and reverse dipping patterns, increased pulse pressure, and BP variability in CKD patients resulting in a high frequency of nocturnal hypertension or masked hypertension. CKD patients with uncontrolled or nocturnal hypertension are at increased risk for cardiovas...

Qingshen Buyang Formula Attenuates Renal Fibrosis in 5/6 Nephrectomized Rats via Inhibiting EMT and Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2019;2019:5370847 Authors: Zhang X, Fang J, Chen Z, Zhao B, Wu S, Pan Y Abstract As renal fibrosis significantly contributes to various kinds of chronic kidney diseases, this study aimed to investigate the renal protective effects of Qingshen Buyang Formula against renal fibrosis on 5/6 nephrectomized rats, and its underlying mechanisms were explored. A total of 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (Sha...
