Publication date: Available online 20 May 2019Source: Pathology - Research and PracticeAuthor(s): Ming Yang, Wenbin WeiAbstractRetinoblastoma represents 3% of all childhood cancers and is the most common intraocular malignant tumor with a highly aggressive and metastatic phenotype. While recent genetic and epigenetic studies have reported new insights into the mechanism of retinoblastoma development, the involvement of regulatory non-coding RNAs remains unclear. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a group of endogenous non-protein-coding RNAs with the capacity to regulate gene expression at multiple levels. Recent evidence ...

In this study, we reviewed major human studies on the health risks of radiation exposure and showed that sex-related factors may potentially influence the long-term response to radiation exposure. Available data suggest that long-term radiosensitivity in women is higher than that in men who receive a comparable dose of radiation. The report on the biological effects of ionizing radiation (BEIR VII) published in 2006 by the National Academy of Sciences, United States emphasized that women may be at significantly greater risk of suffering and dying from radiation-induced cancer than men exposed to the same dose of radiation....

Abstract Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular malignancy in childhood, and the prognosis in the advanced RB is poor. It is urgent to find novel therapeutic targets. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have critical functions in cancer progression, and lncRNA LINC00202 is found associated with poor prognosis in RB. However, the functions of LINC00202 in RB remain unclear. We employed qRT-PCR and immunoblot to detect the expression levels of mRNAs and proteins, respectively. Cell proliferation was determined by CCK-8 assay and colony formation assay. Transwell assays were applied to evaluate the cell abiliti...

Abstract We aimed to investigate the differences in cancer incidence between boys and girls. The incidence data for pediatric cancer were retrieved from the International Incidence of Childhood Cancer. Poisson regression was applied to detect the gender differences in cancer incidence at global and regional levels. Boys were more susceptible to childhood cancers than girls, with a global boy-to-girl incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 1.27 (95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.26-1.28) for leukaemia, 1.48 (95% CI 1.46-1.51) for lymphomas, 1.10 (95% CI 1.08-1.11) for central nervous system neoplasms, 1.11 (95% CI 1.08-1.13) f...

Our aim was to describe, for the first time, the distribution of cases by stage at diagnosis and differences in stage-specific survival on a population basis for ...

Purpose of review Childhood blastomas, unlike adult cancers, originate from developing organs in which molecular and cellular features exhibit differentiation arrest and embryonic characteristics. Conventional cancer therapies, which rely on the generalized cytotoxic effect on rapidly dividing cells, may damage delicate organs in young children, leading to multiple late effects. Deep understanding of the biology of embryonal cancers is crucial in reshaping the cancer treatment paradigm for children. Recent findings p53 plays a major physiological role in embryonic development, by controlling cell proliferation, differ...

Abstract Retinoblastoma is the intraocular malignancy that occurs during early childhood. The current standard of care includes chemotherapy followed by focal consolidative therapies, and enucleation. Unfortunately, these are associated with many side and late effects. New drugs and/or drug combinations need to be developed for safe and effective treatment. This compelling need stimulated efforts to explore drug repurposing for retinoblastoma. While conventional drug development is a lengthy and expensive process, drug repurposing is a faster, alternate approach, where an existing drug, not meant for treating canc...
