Understanding profiles of student binge drinking and eating: the importance of motives - Trojanowski PJ, Adams LM, Fischer S.

Binge drinking and binge eating occur frequently in undergraduates; however, the mechanism driving their co-occurrence is not well-understood. Several theories support the role of motives in driving drinking and eating behavior, especially motivations rela...

Abstract Binge eating (BE) is a heritable symptom of eating disorders with an unknown genetic etiology. Rodent models for binge-like eating (BLE) of palatable food permit the study of genetic and biological mechanisms. We previously genetically mapped a coding mutation in Cyfip2 associated with increased BLE of sweetened palatable food in the C57BL/6NJ versus C57BL/6J substrain. The increase in BLE in C57BL/6NJ mice was associated with a decrease in transcription of genes enriched for myelination in the striatum. Here, we tested the hypothesis that decreasing myelin levels with the demyelinating agent cuprizone wo...

Eating disorders build themselves on perceived feelings of control. Yet, as we find ourselves in the midst of unprecedented and uncertain times, with the coronavirus pandemic, how do those with eating disorders manage? As an individual with an eating disorder, I struggle with the Christmas season, mostly as my ‘safe’ foods are suddenly superseded with aisles of turkeys and potatoes and normal life grinds to a halt for a day as shops close and families and friends gather at home. Coronavirus feels like this, but every single day and on a much bigger scale.  Food aisles are being stripped bare by panic ...

Conclusions This study showed that 12 wk of exercise training reduced wanting scores for high-fat foods and trait markers of overeating in individuals with overweight/obesity compared with nonexercising controls. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind these exercise-induced changes in food reward.

Abstract Yoga has begun to be incorporated into the treatment of eating disorders despite limited empirical support for this practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of incorporating Yoga into the treatment of eating disorders. This preliminary randomized controlled trial investigated the benefits of participating in an eight-week Kripalu Yoga program for 53 women with symptoms of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Compared to waitlist controls, Yoga participants experienced decreases in binge eating frequency, emotional regulation difficulties and self-criticism, and increases i...

cía A, Baños RM Abstract Unhealthy diet and alcohol are serious health problems, especially in adolescents and young adults. "Binge" is defined as the excessive and uncontrolled consumption of food (binge eating) and alcohol (binge drinking). Both behaviors are frequent among young people and have a highly negative impact on their health and quality of life. Several studies have explored the causes and risk factors of both behaviors, and the evidence concludes that there is a relationship between the two behaviors. In addition, some research postulates that binge eating is a precipitating f...

We examined the role of mu opioid receptors (MOP) in binge eating by examining sweet solution intake in mice with genetic deletion of the MOP. Wildtype and MOP knockout mice had 4 hours access to food in the home cage combined with limited (4 hours) access to sucrose (17.1% w/v) or saccharin (0.09% w/v), or continuous (24 hours) access to sucrose. Only limited access groups exhibited binge intake, measured as increased solution consumption during the first hour. Knockout mice consumed less solution and food during the first hour as well as less food each day compared with wildtype mice. Limited access ...

Abstract OBJECTIVES: To determine the personality types of women in treatment for obesity and the associations among their personality characteristics, eating behaviour and suicide risk. SUBJECTS: Sixty women in pharmacological treatment for obesity (clinical group: CG) and 60 women post-bariatric gastric bypass surgery (surgical group: SG) were evaluated. METHODS: This was an observational and transversal study conducted in a specialized outpatient unit. Personality types were evaluated through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test. A semi-structured questionnaire that investigated sociodemographi...
