Going With The Flow

In the summer between 8th grade and high school, I finally got what I had been wishing for —my menses. It came without warning because I didn’t recognize the symptoms that later would become very familiar. I was now a member of the unofficial period club among the girls. Fortunately, the flow was light, so I was able to protect my clothes from any further staining using a wad of toile t paper until I got home. My mom was ready for me with a booklet that was titled something like “Now That You’re a Woman,” a box of pads, and a “sanitary belt” to hold them in place.
