Abstract Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignant tumor and main oncologic cause of mortality in women. Although most diagnosis of breast pathology is accomplished using hematoxylin and eosin stained sections, some cases require immunohistochemistry for proper evaluation. We investigated the latter cases including distinctions between ductal and lobular carcinoma, in situ and invasive carcinoma, typical ductal hyperplasia and atypical ductal hyperplasia/ductal carcinoma in situ, papillary and spindle cell lesion assessment, metastasis evaluation, and assessment of prognostic and therapy markers. E-cadherin is...

AbstractPatients with breast cancer desire to avoid chemotherapy-induced alopecia because it induces mental stress during treatment. Scalp cooling can suppress chemotherapy-induced alopecia without increasing the risk of scalp metastasis; however, in certain cases, alopecia cannot be prevented. The use of properly fitted scalp cooling caps has not yet been explored in Asian patients. Here, we report a case of hair regrowth using a properly fitted scalp cooling cap during adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. A 51-year-old Japanese woman who was recalled by screening mammography for grouped amorphous calcifications and a...

Conclusion: The breast carcinomas evaluated in this study presented a profile similar to that reported in the literature, with some peculiarities inherent to the local pathology service.

In this study, we confirm our initial findings from the proteomic screen and demonstrate that LASP1 can interact with both eIF4A and eIF4B. Importantly, the LASP1-eIF4A and LASP1-eIF4B interaction is shown to be CXCL12-dependent. In addition, the ability of CXCR4 to impact the phosphorylation of eIF4F regulatory proteins is provided. Taken together, we hypothesize that activation of CXCR4 can promote eIF4F complex formation and activity through LASP1 and cell signaling. As a result, the translation of oncogenic proteins is promoted thereby mediating an invasive and metastatic phenotype commonly associated with CXCR4. Mate...

AbstractMetastatic breast carcinoma to the urinary bladder is rare. Eleven cases of metastatic breast carcinoma to the bladder are described in this report, including one case with a tumor to tumor metastasis. The patients ranged from 51 to 83  years of age. The time intervals between the diagnosis of primary breast cancer and the occurrence of bladder metastases ranged from 41 to 336 months. There were seven cases of invasive ductal carcinoma and four cases of invasive lobular carcinoma. In one case, a lobular carcinoma of the breast m etastasized to a concurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder. The immun...

CONCLUSION: This retrospective analysis suggests that eribulin demonstrates similar efficacy in patients with ILC and IDC with metastatic disease who have previously received an anthracycline and a taxane. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Data on the efficacy of chemotherapy regimens in patients with advanced invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) of the breast are limited. This pooled retrospective analysis of three clinical studies demonstrates that the magnitude of benefit of eribulin in the metastatic setting did not differ between patients with ILC versus invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), even when restricting for patients wi...

CONCLUSION: IDC-L tumors have a better prognosis than ILC tumors, particularly among postmenopausal women. Histologic grade is an important prognostic factor in IDC-L but not in ILC. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study compared mixed invasive ductal and lobular carcinoma (IDC-L) with invasive lobular carcinomas (ILCs) to assess the overall prognosis, the prognostic role of histologic grade, and response to systemic therapy. It was found that patients with IDC-L tumors have a better prognosis than ILC, particularly among postmenopausal women, which may impact follow-up strategies. Moreover, although histologic grade ...

Abstract PURPOSE: Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma (PLC) is a rare histologic variant of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) that has been associated with worse clinical outcomes than classic ILC. Owing to its rarity, high-volume studies of its clinical characteristics and prognosis are lacking. The purpose of this study was to use a large, contemporary cancer database to investigate the clinical characteristics and survival outcomes for patients with PLC. METHODS: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for women with cT1-4N1-3M0 breast cancer with either ILC or PLC histology having received definitive sur...
