Review of The Strain Theory of Suicide.

Reviews the book, The Strain Theory of Suicide by Jie Zhang (2016). The strain theory of suicide, which was conceptualized by Zhang, is a highly parsimonious theory of what causes suicide from the viewpoints of sociology and psychology. It tries to examine the underlying causes of suicide, and categorizes them into four dimensions depending on the type of psychological strain they exert upon an individual: (1) value strains; (2) aspiration strains; (3) relative deprivation strains; and (4) coping strains. This book definitely adds to the literature on theoretical frameworks of suicide, which is lacking. At about 80 pages, the book is a good read and educational for laypeople and researchers who wish to understand more about suicide. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
