ConclusionHCV infection was common in certain districts of Punjab and common in adults of 40–60 years. This finding needs to be confirmed in larger population-based study. The IV drug abuse is the risk factor of concern among young adults.

AbstractBackgroundThe ratio of von Willebrand Factor to platelets (VITRO) reflects the severity of fibrosis and portal hypertension and might thus hold prognostic value.MethodsPatients with compensated cirrhosis were recruited. VITRO, Child –Pugh score (CPS) and MELD were determined at study entry. Hepatic decompensation was defined as variceal bleeding, ascites or hepatic encephalopathy. Liver transplantation and death were recorded.ResultsOne hundred and ninety-four patients with compensated cirrhosis (CPS-A 89%, B 11%; 56% male; median age 56  years; 50% with varices) were included. During a median follow-up ...

In this study, we investigated the effect of WDL on lytic human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. We demonstrate a strong interference with HCMV replication as analyzed in multi-round replication settings. A more detailed analysis of the underlying mechanisms revealed that WDL acts at two distinct steps of the viral replication cycle. During immediate early (IE) times, we observe an inhibition of IE1/IE2 expression. Although WDL was reported to interfere with NF-κB signaling our results suggest the existence of additional mechanisms that impede viral IE expression. During later time points of infection, WDL induced a...

Authors: Emara M, Mohsen E, Shawky RM, El-Domany RA Abstract The relation between non-organ specific autoantibodies (NOSA) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been investigated within different communities resulting in different prevalence rates and patterns. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of some NOSA such as RF-IgG, ANA, ASMA, and LKM-1 in Egyptian patients with HCV group as compared with Egyptian healthy controls group. A total of 186 HCV positive serum samples in addition to 81 samples from healthy control were screened for the presence of some common autoantibodies (RF-IgG, A...

Publication date: Available online 11 December 2019Source: EpidemicsAuthor(s): Theresa Stocks, Leah J. Martin, Sharon Kühlmann-Berenzon, Tom BrittonAbstractTo reach the WHO goal of hepatitis C elimination, it is essential to identify the number of people unaware of their hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and to investigate the effect of interventions on the disease transmission dynamics. In many high-income countries, one of the primary routes of HCV transmission is via contaminated needles shared by people who inject drugs (PWIDs). However, substantial underreporting combined with high uncertainty regarding the size ...

In 2018, the number of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) reported in the United States reached an all-time high. This is worrisome for many reasons. Having an STI can raise risks for HIV, infertility, pregnancy complications, and infant death. Fortunately, all of these outcomes can be avoided if people receive appropriate treatment. What are STIs? STIs are illnesses caused by microorganisms passed between people during sex. An STI can affect anyone who is exposed to it. Syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are the most common bacterial infections. Trichomoniasis, a protozoan infection, is also diagnosed freque...

Authors: Ohya K, Kawaoka T, Imamura M, Morio K, Nakahara T, Murakami E, Yamauchi M, Hiramatsu A, Tsuge M, Aikata H, Chayama K Abstract Although direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have significantly increased the sustained virological response (SVR) rates in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected adult patients, the efficacy and safety for children remain unclear. We herein report three HCV-infected children who received DAA treatment. The patients were girls 10-13 years old who had been infected with genotype 1b HCV by vertical transmission based on a phylogenetic tree analysis. Two patients were treated with 12 wee...

In conclusion, DAAs are effective and may be safe for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C genotypes 5 and 6. However, our evidence is based on noncomparative studies; hence, further larger-scale randomized controlled trials in these genotypes are still required. PMID: 31815126 [PubMed - in process]

Herein we investigated the role of liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in the prediction of HCC behavior.MethodsTotally 121 naïve patients with HCC were included. HCC radiological evaluation and staging were done. LSM was measured using virtual touch quantification. Patients were divided into...
