Endosc Int Open 2019; 07: E1262-E1275 DOI: 10.1055/a-0958-2183 Background and aim Transabdominal ultrasound (US), computed tomographic scanning (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are established diagnostic tools for liver diseases. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography is used to perform hepatic interventional procedures including biopsy, biliary drainage procedures, and radiofrequency ablation. Despite their widespread use, these techniques have limitations. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), a tool that has proven useful for evaluating the mediastinum, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and biliary tract, has an ...

This study aimed to determine whether NAFLD grade is an independent risk factor for GD in a Korean population. This study enrolled 7886 participants who completed a questionnaire and underwent medical examination and ultrasound scanning at the Health Promotion Center of Jeju National University Hospital in Korea, from January 2009 to December 2017. Fatty liver grading and presence of gallstones were investigated using abdominal ultrasound. Body mass index and biochemical parameters were measured, and age, sex, and metabolic syndrome status were collected from medical records. Univariate and multivariate analyses were perf...

Conclusions: Immigration increased the incidence of HCC and the need for active treatment such as LT. This fact raises the question of whether immigrants from regions with a high incidence of HCC ought to be subjected to mandatory hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) diagnosis and consequent liver ultrasounds for diagnosis of occult HCC. With such strategies, the morbidity and mortality of HCC could be reduced. PMID: 31190577 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Shah AR, Al-Hanayneh M, Chowdhry M, Bilal M, Singh S Abstract Liver biopsy plays an essential role in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of a vast proportion of liver diseases. Conventionally, percutaneous and trans-jugular approaches have been used to obtain liver biopsies. Endoscopic ultrasound guided liver biopsy (EUS-LB) has emerged as a safe and effective alternate in the past two decades. EUS-LB carries a role in evaluation of both benign and malignant diseases of the liver. It can offer higher resolution imaging of the liver and can detect smaller lesions than computed tomography scan of the a...

Cirrhosis is a predisposing factor for portal venous system thrombosis. The aim of this study is to determine differences between cirrhotics and non-cirrhotics that develop thrombosis in portal venous system and to evaluate i...

We report an unusual case of type 2 CEPS in a 29-year-old woman who presented with progressive myelopathy and fluctuating encephalopathy on a background of congenital cardiac disease. Investigations showed hyperammonaemia, and despite no evidence of portal hypertension on ultrasound imaging, CT scan of abdomen showed a shunt between the mesenteric and left internal iliac veins. Patients with unexplained fluctuating or progressive neuropsychiatric symptoms should have their serum ammonia checked. A raised serum ammonia concentration without known portal hypertension should prompt further investigations for extrahepatic shun...

Conclusions: Pre-transplantation plasmatic miR-155-5p expression may be useful for stratifying low-immunologic-risk patients, and post-transplantation miR-181a-5p and miR-155-5p may be candidates for inclusion in early, non-invasive prognostic biomarker panels to prevent TCMAR or SCR and better identify patient candidates for IS minimization. Large prospective randomized multicenter trials are needed to refine the cut-off values and algorithms and validate the clinical usefulness of these biomarkers. Introduction Despite great advances in immunosuppressive (IS) therapy, T cell-mediated rejection (TCMAR), which is the...
