Probiotics for the prevention of paediatric antibioticassociated diarrhoea

Review (33 RCTs; n= 6352) concluded that the overall evidence suggests a moderate protective effect of probiotics for preventing antibiotic ‐associated diarrhoea (NNTB 9, 95% CI 7 to 13). The likelihood of serious adverse events is very rare.

n White A Abstract Entamoeba histolytica is a rare but feared pathogen owing to its related morbidity and mortality. Physicians in an ambulatory clinic in Cusco noted frequent reports of E. histolytica diagnosed by microscopy. Other non-pathogenic species of Entamoeba have an identical microscopic appearance. To determine whether the organisms were actually E. histolytica, faecal specimens from children aged six months to three years with diarrhoea were tested by a species-specific ELISA for E. histolytica antigen. Although 19/73 patients (26.0%) were presumptively diagnosed with amoebiasis based on microscopy, no...

AbstractIn Autumn 2011, nonspecific clinical signs of pyrexia, diarrhoea, and drop in milk yield were observed in dairy cattle near the German town of Schmallenberg at the Dutch/German border. Targeted veterinary diagnostic investigations for classical endemic and emerging viruses could not identify a causal agent. Blood samples were collected from animals with clinical signs and subjected to metagenomic analysis; a novel orthobunyavirus was identified and named Schmallenberg virus (SBV). In late 2011/early 2012, an epidemic of abortions and congenital malformations in calves, lambs and goat kids, characterised by arthrogr...

This study investigated the efficacy of zinc supplementation on the treatment outcomes of children admitted to hospital with acute diarrhoea. Methods: A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in the Srinakharinwirot University Hospital's Paediatric Department, Thailand. Eligible children were randomly allocated to receive either zinc bisglycinate (15 mg elemental zinc) or a placebo. The study protocol was registered in the Thai Clinical Trials Registry (TCTR20190423004). Results: Of 86 patients, 50 (58.1%) were male and the mean age (range) was 2.5 years (6 months to 9.3 years). The...

Abstract Objectives: In Slovenia, first-trimester abortion is performed at the woman's request, either surgically under general anaesthesia or medically with mifepristone and misoprostol, in a public hospital. Our study aimed to evaluate pre-abortion counselling and to reveal differences in acceptability and satisfaction with the two abortion methods. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at Ljubljana University Medical Centre between January and June 2015. Women requesting termination of a pregnancy up to 10 weeks' gestation voluntarily completed an anonymous questionnaire after the procedure and ...

We aimed to investigate the effect on bone mineral density of switching from a regimen containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate to one containing ...
