Individualized medicine comes to the liver clinic

In 2015, during his State of the Union address, President Obama announced the launch of the Precision Medicine Initiative. This is a research endeavour led by the National Institutes of Health to better understand how individual genome variability, environmental exposures, and lifestyle activities could determine the best approach to prevent and/or treat disease (https://allofus.nih.gov). The human genome contains approximately 20,000 genes and, thus far, nearly 5,000 have been implicated in disease.
