Total Knee Arthroplasty: Fitness, Heart Disease Risk, and Quality of Life

We examined cardiovascular fitness, CHD risk factors, and quality of life in patients for 1 year after TKA compared with matched controls who did not undergo surgery. A total of 14 patients, 7 surgery patients and 7 matched controls, were tested for measurements of body composition, knee range of motion, resting blood pressure, strength testing, a maximal exercise test, quality-of-life questionnaires (Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 and Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Score [KOOS]), and activity monitoring, fasting blood glucose, and lipids at 0, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery or baseline testing. Comparison between the two groups was analyzed. Twelve months after surgery, patients with TKA had significantly (p

This study aimed to investigate if hyperinsulinemia and/or insulin resistance was correlated with the occurrence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in a group of Chinese patients. 258 inpatients were included in the study. According to the postoperative pathology results, all subjects were divided into PTC (n = 153) and control groups (with benign thyroid nodules, n = 105). Body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), FT4, FT3, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb), serum uric acid (UA), ...

Sex hormones regulate the expression of thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) in the uterus, but an inverse link is unknown. We analyzed the impact of hypothyroidism on histological characteristics, vascular endothelia...

However, the genetic spectrum of ATP13A2-associated disorders was expanded in the last years, because it has been found to underlay variants of neuronal ...

ConclusionsThe comparison of different DBDs provided insight into the mechanism of DBD-induced SC permeabilization. It also illustrated the need to tailor electrical characteristics of a DBD to optimize it for a particular treatment modality. For future applications in drug delivery it would be beneficial to monitor the permeabilization during a plasma treatment.General significanceOur results provide mechanistic insight into the potential of an emerging interdisciplinary technology – plasma medicine – as a prospective tool or treatment option. While it might become a safe and pain-free method to enhance skin p...

Authors: Andrade C Abstract Inflammatory mechanisms have been implicated in many psychiatric disorders, including depression, and anti-inflammatory agents have been suggested as potential treatments. In this context, a systematic review and meta-analysis of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cytokine inhibitors, glucocorticoids, statins, minocycline, and pioglitazone, all of which are considered to have anti-inflammatory properties, examined the antidepressant benefits of these agents in 36 randomized controlled trials conducted in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and patients with medical diseases ...

Authors: Yuan S, Ma F, Wang Y, Gong P Abstract Introduction: Pyogenic spondylodiscitis is a bacterial infection affecting the intervertebral disc and its adjacent vertebrae. Although relatively rare, it is a challenging medical disease with a poor prognosis that requires immediate diagnosis and treatment with suitable antibiotics. Aim: To evaluate the clinical outcome of minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) for pyogenic spondylodiscitis. Material and methods: The retrospective study cohort consisted of 10 consecutive patients who had undergone MIS decompression and/or discectomy for thoracic or lumbar pyo...

Authors: Onuk Ö Abstract Introduction: Mid-urethral slings, including transobturator tape (TOT), tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), tension-free vaginal tape-obturator (TVT-O), and a single incision sling, are the most popular procedures for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Although the classical TOT procedure is a minimally invasive technique, we believe that this technique can be further improved. Aim: To determine whether there was a difference in success and complication rates between the classical TOT technique and a novel technique called "modified transobturator tape" (mTO...

In conclusion, documentation is important, a critical part of advocacy and the development process at the larger scale. It isn't just words, but rather a vital structural flow of information from one part of the larger community to another, necessary to sustain progress in any complex field. We would all do well to remember this - and to see that building this documentation is an activity in which we can all pitch in to help. Evidence Suggests that, at Least in Earlier Stages, Alzheimer's Disease Blocks Rather than Destroys Memories https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2017/07/evidence-suggests-that-at-least-in-ea...
