This study assessed an innovative isopropyl alcohol/organofunctional silane solution (IOS) to reduce microbial contamination on inert surfaces in a medical ICU.MethodsBaseline adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence testing (ABT)-measurements (N = 200) were obtained on designated inert ICU surfaces followed by IOS treatment. At 1 and 6 weeks, selective surfaces were randomized to either IOS-treated or nontreated controls for comparison using ABT (N = 400) and RODAC colony counts (N = 400). An ABT value of ≤45 relative light units (RLU) was designated as “clean,” whereas>45 was assessed as &ldqu...

LoweAbstractAfter their initial presentation of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), patients have a lifelong risk of developing another new SCC of the head and neck. The aim of this study was to establish second primary rates, baseline characteristics (site, clinical or pathological stage, and smoking and alcohol history), timing, presentation, treatment, and outcomes. From the regional unit we analysed records of patients treated with curative intent for their first or...

Authors: Carrier P, Debette-Gratien M, Jacques J, Loustaud-Ratti V Abstract The global population is aging, and so the number of older cirrhotic patients is increasing. Older patients are characterised by a risk of frailty and comorbidities, and age is a risk factor for mortality in cirrhotic patients. The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as an aetiology of cirrhosis is increasing, while that of chronic viral hepatitis is decreasing. Also, cirrhosis is frequently idiopathic. The management of portal hypertension in older cirrhotic patients is similar to that in younger patients, despite the greater ri...

CONCLUSION: With the development of interventional radio technologies, and thus extremely precise access to anatomical structures, alcohol has been given new indications - particularly as an embolization, sclerosing or ablation agent. Moreover, constant progress in our knowledge of ethanol's pharmacodynamics might highlight other therapeutic indications for this compound in the future. Ethanol's low cost and wide availability make it a valuable therapeutic agent, compared with other reference treatments. Furthermore, ethanol has a long track record of safety and effectiveness in the indications mentioned above. PMID: 3...

Publication date: Available online 11 October 2019Source: Materials Research BulletinAuthor(s): Hicret Kirtay, Birsel Can Omur, Ahmet Altindal, Nergis ArsuAbstractParameters such as the type of photoinitiator and UV exposure time are investigated in order to tailor the growth of ZnO nanostructures into a variety of dimensions and structures. Based on the type of photoinitiator, by means of specific photoreducing radicals, hollow, doughnut and spherical-shaped ZnO nanoparticles are prepared in one step. 2-Mercapto-thioxanthone (TX-SH), Thioxanthone (TX) and α-aminoketone (Irg-907) are employed as the photoinitiators i...
