Assessment of 131I and 99mTc activity concentration under environmental optics

This study presents the activity concentrations – AC – of 131I and 99mTc in sewage samples collected at a medical facility in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Analysis and measurements by gamma spectrometry were carried out using two detectors: a NaI(Tl) scintillator and an HPGe semiconductor. The levels of AC of 131I present in all samples collected and those of 99mTc present in most samples were above their respective values recommended by the current norm. The detected activities in liquid wastes show the need to regulate their release, so that the acceptable limits of risk related to the environmental radiological impacts are observed.
