SERMs: past and present
SERMs are selective estrogen receptor modulators. Actually, clomiphene citrate was the first SERM, although for all practical purposes, tamoxifen, introduced in the late 1970's, is thought of as the first SERM. It results in increased survival and disease-free survival in women with breast cancer. It is the most widely prescribed anti-neoplastic drug worldwide. It has some untoward effects in the uterus and venous system. It is approved for breast cancer prevention as well. Raloxifene is approved for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis as well as breast cancer prevention.
