Heart health after chemotherapy for breast cancer

The number of long term survivors of breast cancer (BC) has increased significantly over the past decades. This is importantly attributable to the availability and implementation of new treatment approaches including enlarged indications for adjuvant therapy. However, the downside of these new therapeutic regimens is the increased incidence of late side effects, especially cardiotoxicity, varying from subclinical LV dysfunction to overt systolic heart failure. Unhealthy lifestyle behavior, cardiovascular risk factors and genetic factors have an additional negative long term consequences as a result of current BC treatment strategies.
