Lung cancers associated with cystic airspaces: CT features and Pathologic correlation

The definition of cystic airspace was first standardized by the Fleischner Society in 1996 [1] and was described as an enlarged unit of peripheral air-containing lung that was surrounded by a wall of variable thickness. This definition was updated in 2009 [2]. Cystic airspace-related abnormalities differ among cases and include emphysematous bullae, congenital or fibrotic cysts, subpleural blebs, bronchiectatic airways, and distended distal airspaces [3], most of which are indicative of benign lesions.
