The Challenge of Treating Depression in Dementia

Eight years ago Banerjee and colleagues published the results of the largest ever clinical trial of antidepressant treatment for depression in dementia: the Health Technology Assessment Study of the Use of Antidepressants for Depression in Dementia (HTA-SADD).1 They recruited 326 with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and randomly assigned them to double-blind treatment with placebo or up to 150 mg of sertraline or 45 mg of mirtazapine over a period of 13 weeks, after which clinicians were free to adjust the dose of the medications according to the perceived needs of participants.
