Protecting Vulnerable Infants by Ensuring Safe Infant Formula Use

Although it is unquestionable that breastfeeding by an infant's mother is the best route to provide nutrition for infants, it is recognized that this is not always feasible or chosen for a variety of reasons. The debate regarding the role of human milk substitutes, their marketing, and the challenges of supporting breastfeeding have dominated recent discussions about infant formula use. Lost in much of this often-contentious discussion has been a consideration of how best to ensure that infants who are receiving infant formula receive a safe product and that it is provided in a manner that optimizes neonatal outcomes.
