Reducing the Tension Between Patient Safety and Trainee Autonomy

Maintaining quality of care and improving patient safety is a constant challenge in out-of-hospital settings like nursing homes1 and general practices,2 and can be even more challenging when care is provided by trainees during residency training. On one hand, trainees need sufficient supervision because they are more prone to making mistakes3; on the other hand, trainees need opportunities for working autonomously, to prepare them for unsupervised practice.4 Supervision means balancing these interests.
