The Laboratory in Gastroenterology: Use and Abuse

It ’s not just the gastrointestinal/endoscopy lab that’s important in the diagnosis and treatment as well as determining disease course in gastroenterology, it’s the chemistry and physiology laboratory. This laboratory must be effectively and appropriately utilized for the correct indications. As testing has become increasingly sophisticated and individualized, so must our thinking evolve. The emphasis though remains on utilizing the laboratory to make a difference in clinical management; in today’s times it’s not sufficient just to know.
