Kardia Mobile – Smart phone based ECG

Kardia Mobile – Smart phone based ECG Kardia Mobile (Alivecor, San Francisco, CA, USA) is a smart phone compatible device that allows recording of a single lead ECG [1]. Recently a third sensor has been added to allow 6 lead ECG. MOBILE-AF trial (Mobile Phones in Cryptogenic Stroke Patients Bringing Single Lead ECGs to Detect Atrial Fibrillation) is evaluating the role of Kardia Mobile in detection of atrial fibrillation in patients with cryptogenic stroke [2]. It is an international multicenter trial of patients with cryptogenic stroke or transient ischemic attacks. Half of the patients will receive the self ECG recording device and they will be asked to record their ECG twice daily during a one year study period. The other half will receive a seven day Holter monitor. Initial results are expected by the middle of 2019. A recent study addressed the clinical applicability of Kardia Mobile [3]. The device based electrocardiogram and standard 12 lead electrocardiogram was compared in 100 patients at an academic cardiology center. They found that detection atrial fibrillation and flutter were comparable with the two options. The device was superior in detection sinus rhythm than eyeball evaluation of 12 lead ECG. PQ and QT intervals recorded by the device was shorter than 12 lead ECG. Authors recommended larger studies for the evaluation of the device. More and more such smart phone based devices are coming into the market and we need head to head comparisons as well comp...
