Emerging infectious diseases are a constant threat to the public's health and health care systems around the world. These often extremely pathogenic diseases may not be adequately managed by typical application of infection control practices in the emergency department (ED), and nosocomial spread of highly pathogenic emerging infectious diseases in EDs and other health care settings has been observed –in the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome pandemic, outbreaks of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in South Korea in 2015, and an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cluster in a hospital in Dallas in 2014 (1–4).
