The role of gonadal hormones in the hypoglossal discharge activity of rats exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia.

CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to analyze the effects of gonadal hormones on XII neuroplasticity in both female and male rats. The results suggest that the estradiol level is related to XII neuroplasticity rather than the testosterone level, and testosterone may indirectly adjust XII neuroplasticity by converting to estradiol. Estradiol and testosterone levels are related to 5-HT levels in the respective genders. PMID: 31022436 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
