The Ubiquitous Lateral Ankle Sprain: Time to Reconsider Our Management?

Ankle sprains are one of the more common musculoskeletal injuries among physically active individuals, but these are not benign injuries. The rate of recurrence, the chronicity of symptoms, and the rising costs of the evaluation and management of lateral ankle sprains should give us pause. Lateral ankle sprains are simultaneously over- and undertreated, creating a burden on the health care system. Rethinking our approach to the management of lateral ankle sprains is important to improving patient outcomes.
