Preeclampsia and cardiovascular risk in offspring

There is emerging evidence suggesting that offspring of preeclamptic pregnancies may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adult life. In this volume of The Journal, Andraweera et al present the results of a meta-analysis of 36 studies with cumulative data in over 53 000 individuals regarding the effect of maternal preeclampsia on CVD risk factors in the offspring. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 4-5mmHg higher and body mass index (BMI) was 0.36 kg/m2 higher in preeclamptic offspring compared with controls.
